This has been weighing on my heart and mind for a couple years now as Wonderroot has been the primary source of institutional support of my artwork since I moved to Atlanta in 2011. For this I am so grateful. Unfortunately, I have witnessed the mentioned toxicity as an artist and neighbor and friend of staff members. I have experienced my own issues with finance and contracts that led me to distance myself from wanting any further involvement with their work. These experiences are few on a list of several reasons I have stepped away from Atlanta the past year, but that’s another issue all together... Any strength this organization has is due to the integrity of their amazing, dedicated staff. I support and respect every name on this list. Their work has only ever been limited and strained by the current leadership. Thank you for standing together and bringing this to light. But thank you even more for first attempting more quiet and peaceful confrontations with the board. You gave them a chance, I hope now they can hear loud and clear.

I want to add that i am sorry for not being more vocal sooner. I most definitely told everyone in earshot my experiences, but always felt self conscious and guilty about it — afraid of further generating toxicity or participating in the aspects of call-out culture I don’t think are productive. How do we reconcile this? How can we be more vigilant in confronting conflict before it turns chronic or abusive? How can we all be more accountable as individuals so we don’t have to drag and be dragged? I worry about the ways I am still naive to this and really want to have some conversations in this direction if you’re interested plz message or comment ❤️
